The Venice Glass Week 2019

THE VENICE GLASS WEEK is an international festival dedicated to the art of glass, with a particular focus on that of Murano. The festival involves many of the major institutions in Venice, Murano and Mestre, with the aim of revitalizing and sustaining one of the city’s most important artistic and creative activities. The festival is promoted by the Town Council of Venice, and conceived and organized by Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia, LE STANZE DEL VETRO – Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti and Consorzio Promovetro Murano.

Sini Majuri’s glass installation Iceberg will be exhibited in the Venice Glass Week HUB. The opening of the exhibition will take place on September 6th on 6.30 PM in Palazzo Franchetti. The main philosophy behind the pieces is to reflect the climate change.

Sini Majuri also has a solo exhibition in Hotel Saturnia & International. The opening of the 3D graal, Dreams drowned inside glass exhibition will be on September 7th at 6.30 PM in Hotel Saturnia, Calle Larga XXII Marzo, 2398, 30124 Venezia. Exhibition mixes together 100 years old Swedish Graal technique and modern 3D printing. It is a surreal narrative captured inside thick glass, which has details hidden in, that can only be seen from an exact angle.

Gem and Spike lamps exhibited in Tendence fair, Frankfurt

There was a heat wave in Frankfurt, so it was good to walk to the exhibition center early in the morning before the temperature rised to 40 Celcius. A total of 603 exhibitors presented their fashionable lifestyle and trend products at the 3-day lifestyle fair. My booth was in the Hall 8.

I exhibited two new lamp concepts at the exhibition. The 35 cm wide Spike lamp has a “bad attitude”. It is studio made from ceramics and metal. Orders are available via online message.
The second new piece was the emerald green Gem lamp that is shaped by hand and has a dimmable LED light. Every lamp is also signed. Gem is available for order via online message.

Icebergs will be exhibited also in the Venice Glass Week in September. It was great to already meet many Venetian people that were visiting Tendence!
Gem vase has the same solid colored emerald green glass material as the Gem lamp and the green Icebergs. I chose the color as my theme in the booth to highlight the varied essence of glass material.

Golden Design Award from A’Design Award

Jungle Glass Vase is Golden Design Award winner in 2018 – 2019 Furniture, Decorative Items and Homeware Design Award Category in the international A’Design Award in Italy.

A’ Design Award and Competition is the worlds’ largest design competition awarding best designs, design concepts and products & services. The motto of the A’ Design Awards is “Ars Futura Cultura” i.e. Arts Cultivate the Future, Arts for the Culture of Future. The future is shaped by arts, design and technology, thus there is need of good design for a better future.

Inspired by nature, the premise of the Jungle glass collection is to create objects that gain their value from the quality, design and material. Simple shapes reflect the serenity of the medium, while being weightless and strong at the same time. Vases are mouth-blown and shaped by hand, signed and numbered. The rhythm of the glass making process ensures that each object in the Jungle Collection has a unique colour play that mimics the movement of waves.
In a world where there are millions of products and designs launch each year, the award was born out of the desire to underline the best designs and well designed products. The award-winning products and designs are highlighted to the international public via the A’ Design Award Gala-Night and Exhibition in Italy and they are communicated to all relevant press across the world.

1000 Vases exhibition in Dubai Design District

1000 Vases exhibition in Dubai was a cascade of design. Thousand vases at the modernistic atrium space all had their clever details, contemporary twists and interesting use of mediums. Being invited to the international design event was one of the highlights of my spring time.

My green Rainforest glass vases were premiered in the exhibition. Despite so many vases in the show, the set up was fresh and elegant. Each and every one of the objects had their place to shine. Picture @nateleecocks

The technique used in the green Rainforest vases is steam stick. It’s one of the iconic techniques from the golden era of Finnish glass design. I enjoyed seeing the vases side by side and contrasting with modern Tube vases by Fabio Meliota. Picture @nateleecocks

All the guests got fresh hyacinth flowers to take home. Such a lovely idea!
Flowers were also a important part of the set up. After all: vase and a flower have a long history together. Though many of the exhibition pieces can also be seen as sculptures, there is always the throwback of usable object when we look at a vase.
My glass series is blown in the glass town of Riihimäki, in Mafka & Alakoski glass studio. Pieces are shaped by hand, signed and numbered.

During my visit to Dubai I was happy to also be invited to VIP opening of the Art Dubai fair’s main event. The Madinat Jumeirah with water canals and palace-like buildings was very different with all the dull congress centres I have usually seen here in Europe.
Art Dubai 2019 presented more than 90 galleries from 40 different countries. Contemporary, Modern, Residents as well as the inaugural edition of Bawwaba. It was great to meet so many interesting connections for the future collaborations. Picture credit Päivi Lavikainen
When we had some quiet time inbetween the exhibition events, it was also interesting to see the unique nature around the Dubai area. The silence of the desert was very contrasting with the city life. I took some pictures of my Vuoksi glasses in this magical surrounding!
The most inspirational lacation was the town of Al Madam, the ‘Buried Village‘ lost in sand.

New edition of Jungle Collection premiered in Dubai

1000 VASES exhibition in Dubai presents a unique selection of vases in the Dubai Design District during the Art Dubai 2019 Festival. Sini Majuri has been invited to take part to the international show with her latest edition of the Jungle Collection.

Sini Majuri’s glass vase collection Jungle was first introduced by DutZ Collection in 2018 and exhibited in design fairs around Europe, China and Japan. In 2019 there will be 3 new models premiered in Dubai. The theme in the new pieces is “Rainforest”. Eacn object is solid glass and shaped by hand. The technique used is Timo Sarpaneva’s Steam Stick.

The event redefines both the space of the exhibition and the very presentation of an object, here the vase: a functional, everyday object that rises to the rank of fine-art object thanks to the work and imagination of these designers. This medium is therefore perfect to show all the plurality of the artistic scene today.

2019 edition of Jungle collection will be premiered in Dubai. The shape of the objects is inspired by Timo Sarpaneva’s Steam stick-technique.


The public will be invited to discover, throughout the duration of the exhibition, the creations of young independent designers: unique pieces, made in a multitude of materials and reflecting the personality, the universe and the sensitivity of each.

This overwhelming volume of vases compels us with its richness, its diversity and reveals to us all the artistic expertise of these creators. A profusion of vases which is nothing less than the reflection of the inventiveness and the creative intensity which they show, provoking in us this much desired emotion.

To show the singularity of each designer while confronting him with what surrounds him to better understand the dynamism of the current creation, is at it’s core, the philosophy of the project 1000 Vases.

Bukowskis auction and Xmas Design market

I’m delighted to get my first solo theme auction in Helsinki! Contemporary Glass Art by Sini Majuri auction at Bukowskis opens Tuesday 4.12.2018 and closes on Santa Lucia’s day 13.12.2018. I’ll be exhibiting a group of unique pieces made between 2013 – 2018. There is also a graal piece from my Aika series, sculptures that are mixing metal with glass and some unique color editions from Jungle collection. During the Xmas season some of my glass sculptures can also be found from Helsinki City Center’s Stockmann. The sculptures are located in the Interior design section on the 5th floor.

A Glass Journey in Toronto and New York

Exhibition venue for the Nordic Glass exhibition is Harbourfront Centre

A lakeside view opens through the huge windows of Harbourfront Centre in Toronto. Behind the centre rises the CN Tower, the landmark of the city. The building, surrounded by skyscrapers, is filled with Scandinavian art. The self-portraits of Iiu Susiraja cover the walls of the Portraits at Home exhibition. The next space is occupied by massive ceramic works of Anders Herwald Ruhwald. The exhibition, called The Hand is the Mind is the Bomb that Blows, lives up to its name. Nordic Glass gathers up nine skilled Nordic glass artists, who rewrite the history of Nordic glass in the 21st century.

The description of the exhibition:

Nordic glass was at a high point in the mid-20th century. Famous glass factories like Orrefors, Iittala, Holmegaard and Kosta Boda; and designers such as Tapio Wirkkala and Alvar Aalto were synonymous with good design and refined taste. This heyday created distinctive identities for all four countries—Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland—and collectively added to the Scandinavian Modern aesthetic. Sadly, few of the glass factories remain due to market pressures and outsourcing. However, these economic realities have not lessened the association of well-designed and crafted glass within Nordic countries. The situation has given rise to a bright new generation of glass artists and designers; ones with independent spirits focused on self-expression, experimentation and entrepreneurship. This exhibition highlights a group of glass artists shaping the future of Nordic glass for the 21st century.

My objects in the exhibition are glass mountains. These interior design sculptures can be organized to form either scenic ensembles, glass installations or mental landscapes. Glass imitates the characteristics of ice by frosting and cracking. It is the aesthetic of quietness.

During my journey I had the also the chance to visit New York and meet with design gallerists. I was delighted to visit for example Usagi Gallery, where my Sade sculpture was on display during the NYX Design event. Meeting with my contacts in Toronto also gave ideas to some possible future collaboration projects. It was extremely interesting to visit design and art businesses both in Toronto and New York as well as glass galleries of northern parts of USA. Glass was blown in tourist attractions, schools and culture centres. The Nordic Glass exhibition is open in Toronto until the summer of 2019. Welcome!

A Karelian folklore about the origin of the Universe is one of the main inspirations of the Aika sculptures. According to the story, the Big bang was not one of it’s kind. It’s just one bubble in the boiling water that is constantly turning and simmering.

Aika on lasinen kertomus, jossa nykyteknologia kohtaa lasinpuhalluksen perinteet. Jokainen lasiveistos on katkelma surrealistista tarinaa, joka on kuin optisten illuusioiden kautta ratkaistava arvoitus. Kiehtovalla ja erityisen haastavalla tekniikalla luodut teokset esittelevät lasipinnan alla olevia kolmiulotteisia kuvamaailmoja.

Näyttelyn teema, aika, on yhtä moniulotteinen kuin lasi materiaalina. Aika on suhteellista. Pieni hetki voi määritellä koko ihmisen – emmekä kuitenkaan pysty muistamaan edes tärkeimpiä hetkiä täydellisesti.

Veistoksissa massiivinen lasi yhdistetään taiteilijan omakätisiin kuvituksiin, joissa ajan ja paikan ulottuvuudet sekoittuvat. Kun kuvat suljetaan lasin sisään, ne pysyvät muuttumattomina vuosituhansia. Taiteilija kertoo teosten kautta myös meidän ajastamme ja vangitsee sen näin aikakapseleihin tuhansiksi vuosiksi.

AIKA exhibition in Helsinki

My new exhibition will open soon in Helsinki – and it’s getting hotter and hotter at the glass studio whilst finishing the massive glass sculptures for the show. The theme of the exhibition is Time (in Finnish Aika). Time is a puzzle until it is captured inside glass as an optical illusion.

The exhibition place in Glass Gallery Mafka & Alakoski is actually very special to me: We have been working side by side for years, so it’s great to “bring my glass back home”! Marja and Kari have became my dear friends during our collaboration, so the exhibition is also showing how important it is in the world of art to work together!

Process
The first sculptures are ready and being cold worked at the studio.

 

Time is the Chapter Five from the glass cartoon story that has been touring the World the past years. One piece from The Flying Boat just got back from New York. It’s great to exhibit the new glass narrative with some of my earlier works. The inspiration of the Time is in old storied from Karelia region of Finland. For example, one of the stories is about the origin of the world.

TIME
I look at the sea. This familiar infiniteness, I have stayed on its shores
countless times. Still – disconnected from time.
I contemplate how some moments are the most meaningful, how they
can define your whole person. For me time is an invisible companion.
We dive through it, we navigate through it with the help of our memory.
Time smooths its own corners, hides the details of changes.
I have wanted to give form to the invisible. Even if it was a mere whisper.

Unknown Territories exhibition in Usagi Gallery shows 30 carefully selected limited edition pieces from 13 countries. The show proposes an exploration of places, stories and cultures hiding behind every design object. Uncovering the historical, cultural and social context of the exhibits makes us see them beyond their aesthetics. They become flesh and blood storytellers of the world they were born in.

DP presents unique design pieces of leading edge designers from Europe, Asia, Middle East, South and North America transforming Usagi Gallery into a place where cultures, knowledge, and possibilities are exchanged.

The Rain The Flying Boat-story by glass artist Sini Majuri is a cartoon made of glass and a story of transparent moments. Rain is a single scene from a the story that is immortalized inside blown glass. The stories are blown between layers of glass by using a century-old Swedish Graal technique. The layered images are created layer by layer during a slow process that takes months.

“Every object reflects a scene of a narrative that follows the logic of a dream,”

Multiple image layers create surreal and dreamlike visuality in the works. The thick and heavy glass gives interesting optical properties to the dream scenes as the illustrations seem to move and distord as they are observed from different angles: Face of a woman looks sad when looked from above and angry when looked from behind. You can also see under and behind the image layers, there might be something hidden behind a window or deep into the woods in a thick forest. Rain is one of the main themes in this story about a woman that realizes that she is dreaming and don’t want to wake up. There are four individual image layers on top of each other inside every sculpture.
